The Whales of Western Australia

Humpback Whales

Strap in for a wild ride with the Humpback Whales, the true adventurers of the ocean. These magnificent creatures make one of the longest migrations on the planet—travelling a whopping 13,000 kilometres from the icy Southern Ocean near Antarctica to the warmer Kimberley coast.

Hot Spots:

  • Kimberley Coast (Camden Sound Marine Park): This is the ultimate calving ground, where the magic of new life unfolds. Watch as Humpback moms give birth, and calves take their first swims in these sheltered waters.
  • Exmouth and Ningaloo Reef: From August to November, these waters are teeming with Humpbacks showing off their acrobatic moves. It’s also the perfect place to catch glimpses of other ocean legends like whale sharks and manta rays.
  • Perth: Between September and November, the coast around Perth transforms into a whale-watching extravaganza. See Humpback Whales and their playful calves in action as they make their way south, flaunting their impressive leaps and spins.

Blue Whales

If you’re up for a breathtaking encounter, look no further than the Blue Whales. These titans of the deep, the largest animals ever to roam the planet, make occasional appearances around the Perth Canyon.

Hot Spots:

  • Perth Canyon: During summer, the Blue Whales are here, feeding on krill and enjoying the rich bounty of our waters. They head north in winter, but their summer visits are a rare treat for any whale-watching enthusiast.

Southern Right Whales

Southern Right Whales are the laid-back locals of our southern coast, making their way north from the Antarctic to give birth and nurture their young.

Hot Spots:

  • Augusta and Esperance: These are your go-to spots to catch Southern Right Whales up close. Their thick blubber keeps them cosy in cooler waters, making these regions perfect for observing them as they care for their calves.

Orcas

For an adrenaline rush like no other, head to Bremer Bay. This is where the largest pod of Orcas in the Southern Hemisphere comes into play, offering a whale-watching experience that’s as thrilling as it is rare.

Hot Spots:

  • Bremer Bay: From late January to April, Bremer Bay is the place to see these powerful predators in action. The sheer scale and excitement of watching Orcas in their natural habitat is nothing short of spectacular.

Other Less Common Whale Species seen in WA
