When is the Best Time to Visit Perth: 6 Seasons Explained

Perth is known for its brilliant blue skies, golden beaches, and a climate that invites you to enjoy the great outdoors year-round. Whether you’re planning your first visit or coming back to explore more, understanding the city’s seasons will help you make the most of your trip.

Like many places around the world, Perth follows the four-season Gregorian calendar: summer, autumn, winter, and spring. But there’s another, more profound seasonal system that the Noongar people of southwestern Australia have followed for thousands of years. Their six-season calendar goes beyond the calendar dates, reflecting a deep connection to the land, weather, and natural cycles.

In this blog, we’ll discuss both calendars to give you better insight into the seasons of our beautiful city, including things to do!

The Gregorian Calendar

Perth’s climate is often described as Mediterranean, characterised by hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The weather in Perth offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy outdoor activities, from beach days to nature walks, making it a perfect year-round destination.

Summer (December to February)

Perth summers are a sun lover’s dream. With average temperatures soaring above 30°C, it’s the perfect time to hit the beaches, enjoy water sports, or simply bask under the clear skies. February is the hottest month, so be sure to stay hydrated and protect yourself from the heat. Whether you’re soaking up the sun at Cottesloe Beach or surfing at Scarborough, there’s no shortage of outdoor adventures.

Autumn (March to May)

Autumn in Perth is a beautiful time when the heat of summer begins to fade, leaving behind mild temperatures ranging from 14°C to 26°C. With more rainfall, Perth’s parks and gardens become lush and vibrant, making it a great season for hiking or attending outdoor festivals. A visit to Kings Park or Araluen Botanic Park will reward you with changing foliage and plenty of outdoor charm.

Winter (June to August)

Although Perth winters are milder than much of the rest of Australia, they’re still cool and often wet. Average temperatures range from 8°C to 19°C, with July being the coldest month. This is the perfect time for indoor activities like exploring Perth’s Cultural Precinct, home to museums, galleries, and theatres. You can also head to the hills for a cosy winter getaway, with the occasional sunny day perfect for a stroll along the river.

Spring (September to November)

Spring in Perth is spectacular. Temperatures range from 12°C to 23°C, and the city comes alive with wildflowers in full bloom. If you’re a nature enthusiast, spring is the best time to head to the Perth Hills or Avon Valley to witness the seasonal explosion of colour. With more dry days and perfect weather for hiking or outdoor adventures, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to explore the beauty of the region.

The Six Noongar Seasons:

The Noongar calendar, divided into six seasons, is closely tied to natural events that mark the rhythm of the environment—whether it’s the blooming of plants, changes in animal behaviour, or shifts in the weather. Each Noongar season provides a more intimate understanding of Perth’s natural cycles, connecting the people of the land with the changing landscape.

Birak (December to January)

Birak, the first Noongar season, is the “Season of the Young” or “First Summer.” It’s the hottest and driest time of the year, with dry easterly winds sweeping through the land. This is traditionally the time for burning scrub to encourage new growth, and it’s when young animals begin to venture out independently. The red colour represents the heat, sun, and fire that dominate this season.

Bunuru (February to March)

Bunuru is the hottest part of the year, often called “Second Summer.” During this time, the land is scorching hot, with easterly winds and afternoon sea breezes offering some relief. The season is associated with adolescence, tool-making, and hunting and is represented by the colour orange.

Djeran (April to May)

As the weather cools, Djeran marks the “Season of Adulthood.” It is characterised by cooler nights, dewy mornings, and southwesterly winds. The appearance of red flowering plants signals the return of birds and small mammals, making it an important season for predicting winter.

Makuru (June to July)

Makuru is the coldest and wettest season, known as the “Fertility Season.” Frequent rain and westerly winds define this time of year. Traditional practices often involve moving inland to hunt larger game. Wildlife begins to seek mates, and the appearance of purple and blue flowers represents the fertility of the land.

Djilba (August to September)

Djilba is a transitional season, characterised by a mixture of wet and dry days. It’s a time when wildflowers start to bloom in abundance and the land begins to warm up. The season is marked by the emergence of grass-tree flower stalks. Djilba is a time of renewal and abundance.

Kambarang (October to November)

Kambarang is the “Season of Birth,” representing a second spring in the Noongar calendar. During this season, Perth experiences longer, drier periods, making it ideal for outdoor activities. Wildflowers are in full bloom, and it’s a season celebrated for its vitality, marked by the arrival of the first blooms of the year.
