A Guide to Exploring the Swan River in Perth: For First-Timer’s

Perth’s Swan River is the lifeblood of the city—the pulse, the spirit, the adventure. And if you’re not experiencing it from the water, you’re missing out. Wild West Charters knows this river inside and out, and we’re here to show you the heart-racing journey that only we can offer.

Our Guide to Exploring the Swan River in Perth

1. Start at Elizabeth Quay

Your adventure begins at Perth’s crown jewel—Elizabeth Quay, located right on the banks of the Swan River. Opened in 2016, this entertainment precinct perfectly blends urban life with natural beauty. It’s where locals unwind, and tourists come to take in Perth’s skyline at its finest.

With sweeping water views, this is a prime spot for a stroll along the quay or to grab a drink at one of the chic riverside cafes. Don’t miss the Bell Tower—an iconic landmark offering both a bell-ringing ceremony at noon and stunning views from its observation deck. Elizabeth Quay isn’t just a place; it’s the beating heart of Perth’s vibrant arts scene, hosting festivals like the Perth International Arts Festival and the Fringe Festival.

Pro Tip: For a perfect photo op, snap a shot from here and then head to Kings Park for an awe-inspiring panoramic view of the city from above.

2. BHP Water Park

A few steps from Elizabeth Quay is a family-friendly stop—BHP Water Park. During Perth’s hot summer months, this vibrant park comes to life with waterspouts and fountains that let kids splash around while adults enjoy the scenery. The nearby Pinjah mosaic, telling the Dreamtime story of the Milky Way, adds an artistic touch.

While the kids play, take in the lively activity along the Swan River—joggers, wildlife, and plenty of boats moving past. It’s the perfect place to relax and soak up the riverside energy.

3. Barrack Street Jetty & The Island Connection Bridge

Next, head to The Island Connection Bridge—a beautiful pedestrian bridge linking Barrack Street Jetty to the island area, offering perfect views of the river. Cross over and you’ll find Island Brew House, where you can sip a refreshing beverage while soaking in the river views.

On the way, you’ll pass Barrack Street Jetty, where we’re waiting to give you the chance to experience the Swan River from a whole new perspective. Jump aboard a TransPerth ferry to South Perth, or opt for a private Wild West Charter for a more personalised journey.

The short ferry ride across to South Perth treats you to spectacular views of both the city’s modern skyline and the natural beauty of the river. South Perth is also home to cafes and restaurants where you can indulge in a meal with a view.

4. Fremantle: The Perfect Fusion of Old and New

For those looking to experience the full length of the Swan River, cruising to Fremantle is a must. Along the way, you’ll pass luxurious riverside homes and exclusive yacht clubs, getting an up-close look at the city’s waterfront. Keep an eye out for Crawley Edge Boatshed, one of Perth’s most photographed landmarks.

Fremantle itself is a blend of colonial architecture, maritime heritage, and lively eateries. Spend a few hours exploring its streets before treating yourself to fresh seafood by the harbour.
