5 Exciting Day-Trip Activities to Do at Rottnest Island

Rottnest Island is a unique Western Australian gem, isolated in pristine waters off the coast of Perth. It is only 19km from the coast of Fremantle and 30km from Elizabeth Quay in Perth CBD. Known for its unique terrain composed of coast, wetlands, and shrubbery and rich Whadjuk Noongar history, an experience at Rottnest Island is like no other.

The locality of Perth makes it the hot-spot destination for international travellers and Perthians looking for some remote fun! Below, we’ve listed our favourite activities that anyone can enjoy!

Our Top 5 Rottnest Island Activity List:

  1. Visit a Beach or Bay

Rottnest is home to some of the best beaches in Western Australia, so you’re spoilt for choosing where you want to explore the sandy white beaches or secluded bays. Our most iconic spots would have to include tourist’s favourites Little Salmon Bay, The Basin, and Stark Bay Beach. If you want to stray from the masses, try Fay’s Bay or Parakeet Bay for a less crowded experience.

All the beaches at Rottnest are breathtaking, so no matter where you explore, you’re guaranteed spectacular views. There is no shortage of bays and lagoons, so if you run short on time during your visit, make a list for next time!

  1. Immerse Yourself in Eye-Opening Noongar Heritage

Rottnest Island is currently renowned as an iconic tourist hub; however, it was not always this way. Being on the island gives anyone a great opportunity to be educated on the island’s history by visiting the Wadjemup Museum. See artwork, stories, and artefacts documenting the infamous Indigenous Australian history in the various exhibits displayed.

  1. Coast along on a Cycling Trail

Hiring a bike during your visit is our personal favourite way to see the Island while getting in your daily exercise. The island spans 19 kilometres, so cycling is a great alternative, and it definitely beats walking or catching the island bus. Ride free and at your own pace while taking in the views and fresh sea air.

Bike paths and trails cover the island, so accessing the various beaches straight off the path is a breeze. Cycle hire is a popular option for families and a fun school holiday activity to keep the kids entertained.

  1. Befriend a Quokka

Rottnest is home to the world’s largest quokka population, with the brown marsupials being a popular sight throughout the island. The friendly creatures are shy in nature, so be sure to let them approach you first before snapping a fun selfie. While Rottnest Island Quokka can be found in other parts of Western Australia, they are social and abundant at Rottnest, allowing you to interact with unique wildlife during your holiday.

  1. Dine at a Local Restaurant

Rottnest Island offers a wide range of eateries for you to indulge in during your day trip.

If you are after a bite to start your day, head to The Lane for excellent coffee and breakfast options, or drop into the Rottnest Bakery for a quick bite before a fun day of activities.

Frankie’s on Rotto has a large menu for a mid-day meal with delicious lunch staples and a laidback atmosphere. If you want a late-afternoon boozy lunch, check out Pinky’s Beach Club at Discovery Rottnest Island.

After a long day of exploring the island, end your visit with a meal in fantastic style at the Hotel Rottnest Bar + Bistro which offers stunning views of Thompson Bay and is suitable for all including families, making it the perfect way to wrap up your day trip.
